During engine assembly, a piston ring compressor is used to evenly squeeze the rings long enough to slide the piston into the cylinder. Self locking ratchet pawl prevents premature release and allows positive locking action. It is important to lubricate the piston ring compressor as well as the cylinder bore with oil before attempting to push the piston down into the cylinder.
